| Comparing |
| Current GTA Fare Systems |
| and Where Integration Exists |
 |
To
understand why we need to have a better integrated system,
we need to understand what we currently have and how it
works, or doesn't work, together. To keep the comparison
simple, only adult fares will be used
and compared. |
| |
 TRIP-BASED
FARE:
Single fare is paid for a source-destination
trip, meaning that one may continue to travel on the TTC
towards a destination, without any stop-overs or doubling-back.
|
Toronto
Transit Commission
The
TTC operates a single zone system within the
boundaries of the City of Toronto.
Fare:
TRIP-BASED (TIme-based
transfers issued on St. Clair 512
route)
$3.00 cash
$2.50 by token
(5 or 10 at a time)
$121 monthly
pass ($111 per month if signed up for
one year)
Operations
Outside of Toronto:
The
occasional route, such as Steeles East 53B
and 53E loop using streets outside the city
limits, but this is considered still part of
the same fare zone. In this situation, there
are no transfer privileges to non-TTC routes.
A
number of other routes operate to points
outside of the city limits, under contract to
another transit agency. This means that once
outside of the Toronto border, the bus is
really a bus for the other agency. It
must charge the cash fare of the other agency,
and it must accept tickets and passes issued
by the other agency for travel outside
Toronto, though as a convenience an
additional TTC ticket is accepted with an
appropriate cash supplement (35 cents in York
Region, no supplement in Mississauga).
Transfers issued to a passenger paying the
fare for the other agency are punched to
indicate this and are accepted on vehicles of
the other agency at an appropriate transfer
point within a reasonable time.
TTC
Times Two with GO Transit:
Though
stop-overs are not allowed on a single-fare,
the exception to this is when part of the
journey uses GO Transit. A transfer obtained
on a TTC vehicle to get to a GO station,
followed by travel on the next available GO
Train, may be used to board the next
available TTC vehicle at the destination
station within Toronto. A full list of where
this is possible can be found on the TTC's
website at this
page.
Multi-system
Weekly Pass:
The
TTC manages a GTA weekly pass that is
accepted for seamless travel on the TTC,
Brampton Transit, Mississauga Transit, and
York Region Transit. Approximately 5,000 of
these passes are used each week. The current
price for this pass is $52.
|
A single transfer,
obtained when fare is first paid, should be sufficient
for the entire journy, however newer transfers may be
obtained along the way for a more complicated journey,
especially if using the subway system where transfers are
obtained from self-serve dispensing machines.
512 St. Clair Time-based transfers:
|
Transfers issed on the 512
St. Clair route are time-based with an expiry time of
approximately two hours from when it is issued. Until
expired, this transfer may be used to board any 512
vehicle in any direction at any stop. It may also be used
to board any other route in any direction, but only at
stops that connect with other routes.
If one's trip originates elsewhere
on the TTC, a regular trip-based transfer should be
obtained as it may be exchanged for a time-based transfer
when boarding route 512 at a transfer point.
|
| |
| |
 TIME-BASED
FARE:
A single fare provides the user
with approximately two hours of transit usage. Either a
fare receipt (canceled ticket or receipt from a VIVA
station) or a transfer will have an expiry time about two
hours in the future of when issued.
|
York
Region Transit
YRT
operates a three-zone system with York Region,
including its VIVA bus rapid transit system.
Fare:
Fare
Zones:
The
southern end of zone 1 begins at the Steeles
Avenue border with Toronto and extends north
to Bloomington Road. Zone 2 starts at King
Sideroad and extends north to Ravenshoe Road,
and zone 3 is north of Ravenshoe Road.
When
crossing a fare zone boundary, a $1 cash
supplement is payable, though 2-zone tickets
are available for $36 and a 2-zone pass is $150.
Note that zone 1 and zone 2 overlap between
King Sideroad and Bloomington Road, so a
single zone fare applies for travel to and
from either zone into this bounday overlap.
GO Transit's route 69 from Sutton to
Newmarket accepts YRT fares and is the only
route to cross between zone 2 and zone 3.
Operations
Outside of York Region:
The
operation of route 77 between Finch Subway
station and Bramalea City Centre along
Highway 7 is shared by YRT and Brampton
Transit. YRT fare applies, but no transfer
privileges to other Brampton Transit routes
exist without paying the separate Brampton
Transit fare.
YRT
operates a number of routes that travel into
the City of Toronto, serving the Don Mills
subway station, Finch subway station,
Downsview subway station, and the York
University campus. No extra fare
is charged when crossing the border, however
there are no transfer privileges
to and from the TTC south of Steeles. YRT/VIVA
routes can only drop off passengers
travelling south within Toronto and may only
pick up passengers when travelling north
within Toronto.
Fare
Integration with GO Transit:
YRT
offers a "Ride to GO" fare of 50
cents. A passenger heading to a GO station
may pay this fare when showing an appropriate
GO fare. The YRT or VIVA route heading to the
station may be either a regular route (including
TTC contracted routes) or a special YRT GO
Shuttle route. Travelling from a GO station,
the passenger must show either a GO pass, or
a single fare receipt or ancelled ticket with
the current date/time on the cancellation.
Users
of GO monthly passes may purchase a "YRT/VIVA
Fare Integration Sticker" for $20. This
is stuck on the GO pass and becomes a monthly
pass for "ride to/from GO" purposes.
|
This
provides transit entry until its expiry for travel in any
direction within the zone that the fare was paid for.
SINGLE CASH FARE:
YRT has a single cash fare for all
passengers. Discounts for seniors, children, and students
are only available with tickets or monthly passes.
|
GO
INTEGRATION:
The low fare to travel to/from a GO
station is subsidized by GO Transit. While this may
attract more riders, this is seen by GO as an alternative
cost to building more parking space in the 905.
|
"APPROPRIATE"
GO FARE:
One that covers the GO zone the
station is located within. The fare media must be us
usable: a monthly pass for the current month, or a 1-ride,
2-ride, or 10-ride ticket with at least one uncancelled
ride remaining.
|
| |

TIME-BASED FARE:
A single fare provides the user
with approximately two hours of transit usage.
|
Brampton
Transit
Brampton
Transit operates a single zone system with the
City of Brampton.
Fare:
Operations
Outside of Brampton:
Brampton's
Züm route 501/501A (Queen) and VIVA Orange
co-exist between Highway 7/Martin Grove and
York University and fare for either service
applies. Brampton transfers are valid to
board connecting YRT services along Highway 7
between The Gore Road and Interchange Way.
Further connections to other YRT routes
require a new fare, with one exception. When
boarding YRT route 77 with a Brampton
transfer, a new YRT transfer is provided when
requested. Brampton tickets and passes are
not accepted on YRT.
A
valid YRT transfer or pass is accepted on
Brampton Transit only at connection points
between The Gore Road and Interchange Way. A
Brampton transfer may be requested from the
operator. Brampton Transit and YRT do not
accept each other's transfer at Humber
College.
Where
Brampton Transit and Mississauga transit have
routes that intersect or travel along the
same road, each accepts the other's transfer
for boarding.
Fare
Integration with GO Transit:
Brampton
Transit offers GO Fare Integration for 65
cents. A passenger heading to a GO station
may pay this fare when showing an appropriate
GO fare. Travelling from a GO station, the
passenger must show either a GO pass, or a
single fare receipt or ancelled ticket with
the current date/time on the cancellation.
|
A
transfer will have an expiry time about two hours in the
future of the starting time for the route (not issue time!).
This provides transit entry until its expiry for travel
in any direction.
SINGLE CASH FARE:
Brampton Transit has a single cash
fare for all passengers. Discounts for seniors, children,
and students are only available with tickets or passes.

The
new Mississauga Transit
Mississauga
Transit operates a single zone system with the
City of Mississauga.
Fare:
Operations
Outside of Mississauga:
Mississauga
Transit operates several routes that travel
into the City of Toronto, serving the
Islington subway station, Long Branch GO
Station, and a few other destinations. No
extra fare is charged when crossing
the border, however there are no
transfer privileges to and from the
TTC inside Toronto city limits.
Where
a transfer connection exists with Brampton
Transit or Oakville Transit, a valid
Mississauga Transit transfer may be used to
board the other vehicle to continue a trip.
If the trip requires an additional transfer
to another Brampton or Oakville vehicle, an
additional fare is required.
Fare
Integration with GO Transit:
Mississauga
Transit offers GO Fare Integration for 60
cents. A passenger heading to a GO station
may pay this fare when showing an appropriate
GO fare. Travelling from a GO station, the
passenger must show either a GO pass, or a
single fare receipt or ancelled ticket with
the current date/time on the cancellation.
When more than one bus is needed, a special
transfer is issued that must be shown with
the GO fare on subsequent buses, and
surrendered on the last bus to the station.
Users
of GO monthly passes may purchase a sticker
for $24. This is stuck on the GO pass and
becomes a monthly pass for "ride to/from
GO" purposes.

Durham
Region Transit
DRT
operates a single zone system with Durham Region.
Fare:
Operations
Outside of Durham Region:
DRT
operates one route into Toronto's city limits:
109 Rouge Hill Shuttle. This route operated
only during rush hours and does not pick up
or drop off passengers within Toronto except
at the Rouge Hill Go station. There is no
fare integration with the TTC, and therefore
no transfer privileges.
Service
co-operation with GO Transit:
DRT
and GO Transit have a "One Fare Anywhere
in Durham Region" program, allowing
passengers to use GO bus services as part of
their trip. This does not apply to cash fares
on GO or trips beginning or ending outside of
Durham Region. When boarding GO, only tickets,
passes, or transfers (obtained on a DRT bus)
are accepted.
Fare
Integration with GO Transit:
DRT
offers a "Co-fare" of 65 cents, or
10 "Co-fare" tickets for $6.25. A
passenger heading to a GO station may pay
this fare when showing an appropriate GO fare.
Travelling from a GO station, the passenger
must show either a GO pass or a cancelled
ticket with the current date/time on the
cancellation.
A
monthly pass version of this fare is
available for $25.
|
TRIP-BASED
FARE:
Single fare is paid for a source-destination
trip, meaning that one may continue to travel on DRT
towards a destination, without any stop-overs or doubling-back.
That said, their web site also
states, "Transfers are valid for two hours for a
continuous trip in any direction other than the route
issuing the transfer."
GO Transit buses operating within
Durham Region may be used for part of the trip.
